A Mission of History and Education
The celebrated "Spirit of Freedom", the
World War II Douglas C-54 which serves as the world's only museum and exhibit
about the great Berlin Airlift of 1948 and 1949, will be on display at
Celebrate Freedom ™ . The one-of -a kind museum serves as the only center
which presents the airlift events for historical and educational purposes.
Tour the inside of the "Spirit of Freedom"
to view a collection of photos and displays depicting the Berlin Airlift when
330 Douglas C-54 transports were used to supply food, medicine, and other
lifesaving essentials to 2.5 million Berliners who were cut off from the outside
world by the communists.
On June 24th, 1948, the Soviet Union
blockaded Berlin and the only means of reaching the city was by air. A massive
airlift was begun and continued until May 12, 1949, when a settlement was
reached with the Russians.
During that period of time, 2.3 million
tons of supplies were flown to Berlin involving 277,870 flights. The "Spirit of
Freedom" can carry 20,000 pounds of cargo and cruise at 200 MPH. With a full
fuel load of 3,540 gallons, it can remain aloft for 17 hours. Its four Pratt and
Whitney radial R-2000 engines each rate at 1,450 HP.
