K-9 Corps War Dogs

"Kelly"

In Loving Memory

"Kelly" served and died in Viet Nam in 1971. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 39th Scout Dog Platoon, U.S. Army. "Kelly" saved many soldiers from injury and death. He was loved and will not be forgotten!

Please attend Celebrate Freedom ™ and learn more about the important role played by the Military War Dogs; from the handlers and dogs who will be located adjacent the the Viet Nam Flight Operations Tent on the east side of the airfield.

"Buck" who is pictured below, as he stood in front of the Viet Nam Memorial, will be on duty at Celebrate Freedom ™. "Buck" is the only canine soldier who has ever been permitted to wear "Kelly's" harness and uniform. After a period of 30 years, "Buck" donned "Kelly's" equipment at a special ceremony on October 8, 2000 at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

Ten(s) of thousands of dogs have served and protected American troops in battle. Their service has saved countless lives. Let us remember our forgotten heroes.

"Kelly" was one of 4,500 dogs that served the U.S. Military during the Viet Nam War. The Viet Nam War Dogs prevented over 10,000 Americans from becoming casualties. They saved the lives of our fathers, our sons, and our brothers. Sadly their reward at the end of the conflict was a lethal injection. "Kelly" was one of the 2,900 military dogs that were euthenized in 1971.

Without Them We Would Be Honoring More Names On Our Memorials

Since World War II over 30,000 have served,

From 1949 until November 6, 2000, when President Clinton enacted a new law, there was no retirement for them,

Their only reward for a lifetime of service was an injection.

They have saved thousands of American lives,

Nearly 4500 served in Viet nam - over 300 were killed in action, 500 died of disease, and 1,000 were turned over to the Army of South Viet Nam.

When our troops pulled out of Viet Nam, over 2,000 were put down because thet were considered "equipment".

They deserve better, they were our War Dogs.
