Restoration Project
An important piece of World War II Pearl
Harbor has been saved by the Celebrate Freedom Foundation ™ . The
Foundation has saved the Twin 40mm Bofors Anti Aircraft Gun which served aborad
the destroyer Downes, DD 375, from being cut up and melted down.
The USS Downes was situated in front of
the battleship Pennsylvania, BB 38 on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese
attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. The Downes sustained serious damage
during the raid and it underwent extensive repair before returning to service
with the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet in 1943. The Downes was decommissioned and
sold for scrap shortly after World War II. The Twin 40mm Gun, now owned by the
Celebrate Freedom Foundation™ is the last known surviving part of the
proud ship which had been nearly destroyed at Pearl Harbor and which rose again
to valiantly serve our nation. We commend the brave sailors of her crew who
fought to preserve the freedoms which we enjoy today.
The special national treasure will be fully
restored and placed as a memorial to the World War II Navy and Pearl Harbor
service members. The Foundation is currently seeking sponsors to help with this
worthwhile project. Donation to the Celebrate Freedom Foundation™ are tax
deductible. If you can lend support, please contact:
